The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Institute of International Affairs of the University of Iceland and Varðberg, an organization for Western cooperation and international affairs, are hosting a open meeting to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation in Hátíðarsalur, main building at the University of Iceland, Monday 13 May from 10 to 12.
In the 75 years since the NATO was founded, it has been a cornerstone of European security, safeguarding the freedoms and shared values of its member states based on the principles of democracy, individual freedom and the rule of law. The importance of the Alliance has steadily increased, not least because of the growing tension between the great powers and the changed worldview we face today. The challenges are many and the solidarity of the member states is more important than ever.
At the meeting, Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir, Minister of Foreign Affairs, delivers an opening speech, while Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of NATO and Lithuania's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gabrielius Landsbergis, also address the meeting online. Panel discussion on the role of NATO, present and future, will be held in Icelandic.
