Hanna Styrmisdóttir is a curator based in Reykjavík and a Professor of Curatorial Practice at the Iceland University of the Arts. Since 2020 she has led the development and teaching of a newly launched MA in Curatorial Practice at the university‘s Department of Fine Art.
As curator, artistic director and educator, Hanna has emphasized collaboration, inclusivity, diversity and justice in contemporary arts and curating. Prior to her appointment at the IUA, Hanna was Artistic Director & CEO of the international and multi-disciplinary Reykjavík Arts Festival for four editions (2012-2016), Curator of the Icelandic Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 52nd International Art Exhibition in 2007, and has held positions at the Nordic House in Reykjavík and the Reykjavík Art Museum as well as managing large-scale projects for Reykjavík European City of Culture and the Icelandic Visual Arts Awards.
In a practice spanning 25 years, Hanna has curated, commissioned and organised over fifty exhibitions, festivals and new works, collaborating with a majority of arts institutions in Iceland, as well as with international bodies including the Manchester International Festival, Artangel, Art Basel, museums, theatres, collectors and artists‘ representatives. She has served on numerous national and international boards and panels in the arts.
