From Ally to Adversary? The U.S. and Europe in Trump‘s second term

Open seminar hosted by the Institute of International Affairs at the University of Iceland, Monday 5 May from 12:00 to 13:00 in the Lecture Hall in Edda (E-103), University of Iceland.
About the Seminar

As the second Trump administration approaches its 100-day mark, it has adopted a confrontational stance toward Europe. Trump and his team are forcing Europeans to fundamentally rethink the continent’s security. The turbulent early months of Trump 2.0 have driven wedges between the United States and Europe.

Where do transatlantic relations go from here? Can Europe summon the financial resources and political will to reform its defense sector and reestablish deterrence without substantial American support? What is the future of Europe’s two multilateral institutions, NATO and the EU? What lessons are there for European countries that are members of one, but not the other? And what does all this mean for Europe‘s Atlantic and Arctic flank –including Iceland?

Constanze Stelzenmüller is an expert on German, European, and transatlantic foreign and security policy and strategy. She is the Director and Fritz Stern Chair at the Center on the United States and Europe at Brookings Institution. Stelzenmüller is a well known political commentator and op-ed contributor to major media outlets, including Financial Times.

Moderator: Silja Bára Ómarsdóttir, Professor of International Affairs and newly elected Rector of the University of Iceland.

The seminar will take place in English and is open to all.
