In this seminar Ignacio Molina will review the challenges and opportunities that are facing the EU today. The rise of populism, Brexit and various geopolitical risks, all contribute to the current uncertainty surrounding the future of the EU. However there are still opportunities for achieving greater integration in policy areas such as the euro, migration and defence. The Eurosceptic turn taken by some national capitals offer Spain a window of opportunity to underpin its position in the EU, in light of its relative economic stability and commitment to European integration. These strengths could, however, be offset by political instability and the long shadow of the turbulent situation in Catalonia.
Ignacio Molina is a Senior Analyst at the Elcano Royal Institute and Lecturer at the Department of Politics and International Relations at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.
