Open seminar hosted by the Institute of International Affairs at the University of Iceland
Mediterranean Migrant Crisis
Record numbers of desperate migrants are dying whilst trying to reach Europe from the shores of Libya, a country without law, order or a functioning government. European countries are scrambling to find a policy response that will stop the deaths and restore some stability to the region. But governments have faced much criticism regarding search and rescue efforts. In this open seminar Hugo Brady will outline some basic facts about the current crisis in the Mediterranean, including the smuggling networks which have greatly added to the scale of the problem.
Hugo Brady currently works as speechwriter to the President of the European Council and is also an advisor in the field of EU migration policy. At this seminar he will be speaking in a strictly personal capacity.
Moderator: Þórir Guðmundsson, Head of Division, Icelandic Red Cross
The seminar will take place in English and is open to all
