Open seminar hosted by the Institute of International Affairs at the University of Iceland in cooperation with the EU Info Centre in Iceland

Animal welfare in Iceland and Europe

This open seminar will focus on where Iceland stands in relation to Europe when it comes to animal welfare. Recent developments in this sector will be discussed and how the EU’s policies affect legislation in Iceland.

Is animal welfare a barrier to trade?

In recent years there have been major changes to farming practices within the EU. Now the EU requires animal welfare to be taken into consideration when formulating and implementing key policies such as agriculture, the internal market or research. This lecture will focus on developments which have taken place in these sectors, the roadblocks that were encountered and the aspects which worked better to bring about compliance.

Terence Cassidy is the Head of Sector for Animal Welfare at the European Commission’s Food and Veterinary Office.

New animal welfare legislation in Iceland: Where do we stand in relation to EU?

This presentation will introduce Iceland’s new animal welfare legislation and compare it to current EU legislation. Which parts of EU legislation concerning animal welfare have already been implemented in Iceland? What has been agreed for implementation in the future? And what effects have animal welfare policies in the EU had on Icelandic legislation?

Þóra Jóhanna Jónasdóttir is a Veterinary Officer for Pet Diseases and Animal Welfare at the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority.
