Small States Summer School 2018

Small States in Europe: Towards a Cross-Disciplinary Approach

The 2018 Small State Summer School is organized around four interlinked teaching and research themes (TRTs) that all have specifically targeted relevance to disciplines beyond the traditional focus of small state studies. This summer school will introduce traditional themes of small state studies to students while also focusing on how small state studies can be incorporated into other disciplines from the viewpoint of these four TRT’s. The summer school is organized as part of the Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership project “Small States in Europe: Towards a cross-disciplinary approach”.

TRT 1: Small states: Foreign policy and economic security

TRT 2: Small states addressing the migration crisis

TRT 3: Small states in international law

TRT 4: Small states and the challenges of good governance

The course brings together some of the leading scholars in the field of small state studies who have a combined knowledge in various disciplines such as political science, economics, law, history, public policy and sociology.

Dates from Monday 18 June to Saturday 30 June

Students apply directly to the Centre for Small State Studies by sending a statement of purpose, a CV and a recent transcript to ams@hi.is.

Learning Outcomes:

Students enrolled in the course will gain:

  • Concrete knowledge concerning the challenges and opportunities of small states in Europe and how these states have been able to take advantage of the opportunities created by European institutional structures and political history. Students will furthermore gain critical insight into how these states seek to meet the challenges associated with new economic and security challenges, globalization and regionalization.
  • The competencies to independently analyze these opportunities and challenges and the responses by small states, including selected case studies.
  • The ability to critically reflect upon the opportunities and challenges of small European states and how they respond to them.
