EU Enlargement and the Balkans

Friday March 30th Julie Herschend Christoffersen, a former researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies, gave a talk on relations between the European Union and the countries of the Western Balkans. The seminar wasa part of the Europe Dialogues, the IIA´s seminar series spring 2012.

Enlargement has been called the greatest foreign policy achivement of the EU. The Western Balkans are now next in line to undergo major reforms and join the union. But what is the current state of play of this process? And is it even possible to apply the same instruments to countries, which are still deeply affected by the consequences of war? Herschend Christoffersen gave an overview of the relations between the EU and the countries of the Western balkans and touched upon some of the most difficult cases in this relation.
Julie Herschend Christoffersen is a former researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies, currently working for the European Commission´s Representation in Copenhagen, during the Danish Presidency of the EU.
