In the framework of the Institute of International Affairs and Centre for Small State Studies’ fall seminar series Rosa Balfour, Senior Policy Analyst at the European Policy Centre, gives a lecture on the European Union and the Arab Spring. The lecture will be held on Friday, 23rd September, from 12:00 to 13:00 in Oddi 201 at the University of Iceland.
Dr. Rosa Balfour has researched and published widely on issues relating to European foreign policy and external action, relations with the Mediterranean region, Eastern Europe and the Balkans, EU enlargement, and on the role of human rights and democracy in international relations. Prior to joining the European Policy Centre in 2007 and becoming the head of its Europe in the World Program, she was Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Studies in International Politics (CeSPI) in Rome. Her forthcoming book is entitled „Human Rights and Democracy in EU Foreign Policy: The cases of Ukraine and Egypt“.
In next Friday’s lecture Rosa Balfour will discuss European Union responses to the Arab Spring. While initial responses to the upheavals occuring in the Arab world since December 2010 were cacophonous, the EU has gradually been revisiting its policies to deal with the changes. The transformation of the region remains uncertain and uneven, with important differences between countries, yet it is worth asking whether the Arab spring is leading to a shift in Euro-Mediterranean relations. Is the EU willing and able to contribute towards shaping a new Mediterranean?
The lecture will be held in English and open to all.
